Mutant Poppycock

Hello Tape fans! The blog's been quiet on the mp3 front of late so I thought I'd pick out a couple of juicy nuggets from last year to delight your senses. First up is the Villalobos track that Carl Craig played early on in his set last Thursday. I never thought that I'd ever hear it played out, especially in Bristol, but it was a lovely surprise to hear it booming out of Native's fat soundsystem. Apparently it's a reworking of a classical piece of music by a famous composer (any ideas?), but don't go expecting any huge departures from the sound that we know and love. Classic Ricardo, through and through.

If you've heard the Mutant Pop mix by now (download here), then you'll probably already be familiar with the opening track of the mix. 'Lions Gate' was the A-side on the second 'Art Of Tones' release, and is a wobbly chunk of boompty italo-informed electro-house. 'Van Again' (featured on the series' first instalment) still keeps that nu-italo vibe going but with more of a Detroit flavour to it. The producer of these tracks still remains unknown in a Rex The Dog vein (we know it's you, JX!), so if anyone's got any idea who's behind these absolute gems then please let us know.

If you've been reading this blog at all (and not just downloading the mp3s, you leeches!) then you'll probably be aware that we'll be hosting the first of our Mutant Pop parties tomorrow. If you're going to be in Bristol, then you could do a lot worse than heading down to the Arc Bar to check how the synergy of Tape and Vayge is going down. See you there!

the Villalobos track is sampling (rather blatantly!) Philip Glass's Koyaanisqatsi soundtrack; I think the specific track is "Facades" but I could be wrong.

This is totally unrelated but you can download a Silversurfer track gratis from Beatport at the moment. It's called 'Big Case' and comes in at a pleasing 320kps. It's not too bad either ;o)

Dudes. If I even needed an excuse to jet out of San Francisco for a long weekend in Bristol, you guys would be it for sure. I know I'd enjoy a bit of yr mutant pop candyshop. Keep up the great selections and entertaining writing, and if you ever get the opportunity to take yr party on the road to my neck of the woods, drop me a line. :D
